Monetary Financial Institutions, as defined by the European Central Bank, are all financial institutions which together form the money issuing sector of the euro area.

- the European Central Bank,
- the national central banks of the euro area countries,
- and credit institutions
- certain other financial institutions that receive deposits and/or close substitutes for deposits from the public and, for their own account, grant credit and/or make investments in securities
